Today’s Poem ~ Holy Sonnet

Holy Sonnet

John Donne

Death be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think`st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but they pictures be,
Much pleasure, then from thee much more must flow;
And soonest our best men with thee do ,
Rest of their bones, and souls` delivery.
Thou art slave to Fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep well,
And better than they stroke; why swell`st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And death shall be no more, Death thou shalt die.

Today’s Inspiration ~ Hang in There, Good Days are Coming

“Fortune may have yet a better success in reserve for you and they who lose today may win tomorrow.”

~ Miguel de Cervantes

What if I stopped to think before reacting?

What if I stopped to think before reacting? That’s another tough one for me. I can blame it on my DNA and say I’ve come from a long line of reactors (LOL – if you’ve ever been to an Italian family Sunday dinner, you’ll know what I mean). Or, I could slam the brakes and stop before I react. We each receive thousands of stimuli each day. We react to the stimuli. Most of our reactions go unnoticed. There are times when our reactions are strong and out of proportion to the stimuli. When we slow the process down, we can hit the pause button on our reaction, let our emotions even out, and then make an appropriate response. How long should we pause? As long as it takes to return to a sense of peace and determine an appropriate response.

Today’s Health Tip ~ Is Popcorn a Healthy Snack?

Popcorn Can be a Healthy Snack, But  . . .

Popcorn can be a healthy snack, but the nutritional quality varies considerably.

Go with organic or non-GMO popcorns made with extra virgin olive or avocado oil and seasoned with sea salt or pink Himalayan salt. If you prefer more indulgent varieties of popcorn, make them occasional treats rather than daily staples. And be aware of portion sizes. The serving size of popcorn is typically three to three and a half cups, but it’s easy to polish off a full-sized bag in one sitting. And that could be the carb equivalent of eating five slices of bread. Plus, the extra sodium may cause fluid retention that triggers bloating.

Today’s Joke

Joe: “My girlfriend accused me of cheating on her.”

Pete: “What did you say?”

Joe: “I told her she was starting to sound like my wife.”

A Better Life ~ Are You Ready for the Chase?

We all want to succeed. Yet, there is no guarantee of success. We do know that success doesn’t come knocking on the door, we have to chase it. The chase is fraught with all kinds of challenges. Those who persist and give it maximum effort, increase their chances they’ll get to dance with success.

Think About It

 I have my favorite sports teams. Some I have had since childhood and a few others I’ve picked up along the way. I enjoy watching them compete. I enjoy it when they win. If it’s a big game, the outcome of the contest affects me emotionally. I’ll hit a high note when my team wins and a low note when my team loses. During the contest my emotions often seem as if they are riding a roller coaster. Twenty-four hours after the contest, I’m off to thinking about the next game. Life is a lot like this. We go through a series of ups and downs through life. The ups are not permanent, nor are the lows permanent. As in athletic contests, life asks us to let go of the ups and downs and move on. That’s what the good teams do, they move on. That’s what healthy people do as well, they move on.

Today’s Power Thought ~ It’s All Happening Now

Go all in on the present moment, give it all you’ve got. Do it for each succeeding moment and you’ll blaze a trail worthy of being followed.

A Better Life ~ We All Have a Part to Play

Whether we like or not it, people depend on us. And, we depend on them. As poet John Donne said, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” When we each play our part and commit ourselves to being responsible and doing our duty, things tend to turn out well. It all begins with those closest to us and then reaches out like ripples on a pond.

What if tomorrow promised to be better than today?

What if tomorrow promised to be better than today? How would you feel? Me? I’d be so excited, I’d be singing off key at the top of my voice and believing I sounded like Sinatra. What if I act like tomorrow was going to be better than today and stepped out in faith that it was about to happen? Everything changes. My attitude scale tips toward the positive. I bring more energy to my work. And, my mood is infectious to those around me.
