Feel Good Tip for Today ~ The Importance of Touch to Health & Happiness

Do you know what is the largest organ in the human body? If you said the skin, go to the head of the class. It is why we feel better after we’re hugged, after someone holds our hands, and much of what makes the act of making love an integral part of human life. In many cultures hugging or a small embrace upon meeting is natural. It has always seemed natural to me. A lot of it comes from the Italian culture in which I was raised. Now, research tells us that touch is essential to human happiness and health. Try it with those you love. It will soon become second nature to you.

Positive Thought for Today ~ Patience Pays Off on Many Levels

Patience Matters

We hear a lot about the importance of patience when striving for an important goal or reaching something we’v always dreamed about. How much more important is patience in waiting for someone we love to get their life together? I’ve witnessed families fall apart because there was no patience with one who is struggling to figure it out. I’ve also witnessed the opposite where families held the door open and waited and their waiting paid off in reconciliation. Patience does pay off on many different levels..

Inspiring Thought for Today ~ Doing Good

“The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway. For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.”

Joke of the Day

Joe: “I brought my girlfriend some flowers.”

Pete: “Was she happy?”

Joe: “She was until I told her I picked them off a grave.”

Poem for Today ~ At Sunset

At Sunset

Emily Pauline Johnson

To-night the west o’er-brims with warmest dyes;
Its chalice overflows
With pools of purple colouring the skies,
Aflood with gold and rose;
And some hot soul seems throbbing close to mine,
As sinks the sun within that world of wine.

I seem to hear a bar of music float
And swoon into the west;
My ear can scarcely catch the whispered note,
But something in my breast
Blends with that strain, till both accord in one,
As cloud and colour blend at set of sun.

And twilight comes with grey and restful eyes,
As ashes follow flame.
But O! I heard a voice from those rich skies
Call tenderly my name;
It was as if some priestly fingers stole
In benedictions o’er my lonely soul.

I know not why, but all my being longed
And leapt at that sweet call;
My heart outreached its arms, all passion thronged
And beat against Fate’s wall,
Crying in utter homesickness to be
Near to a heart that loves and leans to me.

Health Tip for Today ~ Is Diet Soda Bad for You?

Is it Time to Ditch Diet Soda?

While it is considered a low-calorie or zero-calorie alternative to regular soda, there are potential concerns associated with its consumption. Here are some points to consider:

  1. Artificial sweeteners: Diet sodas typically contain artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, or saccharin. These sweeteners provide the sweet taste without the added calories. However, some studies have suggested a potential link between artificial sweetener consumption and negative health effects, such as metabolic disorders, weight gain, and increased cravings for sugary foods. The evidence on these associations is mixed and more research is needed.
  2. Dental health: Diet sodas are acidic, and frequent consumption can contribute to tooth enamel erosion and dental decay. The carbonation and acid content can weaken the tooth enamel over time. It is advisable to drink diet soda in moderation and practice good oral hygiene.
  3. Impact on weight management: One of the primary reasons people choose diet soda is to reduce calorie intake and manage weight. However, studies examining the relationship between diet soda consumption and weight loss have produced conflicting results. Some research suggests that diet soda may not necessarily aid in weight management and could even be associated with weight gain. This could be due to various factors, including compensatory overeating or the influence of artificial sweeteners on metabolism.
  4. Association with other health conditions: Some studies have found possible associations between diet soda consumption and increased risk of certain health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. However, it is important to note that these associations are not necessarily causation, and other factors such as overall dietary patterns and lifestyle choices may play a role.
  5. Individual considerations: It’s essential to consider individual factors when assessing the impact of diet soda on health. Some individuals may have sensitivities or adverse reactions to artificial sweeteners, while others may find diet soda helpful in reducing overall sugar intake. Personal health goals, preferences, and overall dietary patterns should be taken into account.

Poem of the Day ~ The Spring Has Many Silences

The Spring Has Many Silences

Laura Riding Jackson

The spring has many sounds:
Roller skates grind the pavement to noisy dust.
Birds chop the still air into small melodies.
The wind forgets to be the weather for a time
And whispers old advice for summer.
The sea stretches itself
And gently creaks and cracks its bones….

The spring has many silences:
Buds are mysteriously unbound
With a discreet significance,
And buds say nothing.

There are things that even the wind will not betray.
Earth puts her finger to her lips
And muffles there her quiet, quick activity….

Do not wonder at me
That I am hushed
This April night beside you.

The spring has many silences.
