Joe: “My best friend is celebrating his 10th anniversary with the woman he loves.”
Pete: “That’s great.”
Joe: “If he tells his wife, she’ll kill him.”

Four years ago I planted a fig tree. My fig tree withstood the brutal freeze that hit south Texas two years ago. It withstood an ice storm this year. It lost some branches in the process, but it bounced back. Right now it is loaded with an abundant crop of figs. I picked my first figs yesterday and savored every bite. My fig tree is a good example for us. It handles the tough times, it bounces back, and it continues to produce abundant fruit. Never quit. Never give up.
One of my daughters and her family recently traveled to South Africa. My daughter planned to run in a 50 mile race (after the race she said it was actually 55.1 miles, when you run that far, you take credit for every step!). She is a very good runner. The day prior to the race there was a 5K race. My daughter and her family all entered it, she viewed it as a warm up for the 50 mile race the next day. After the race a group of runners celebrated the 5k. She text me a brief video that I share with you because the runners expressed so much joy in their celebration dance. The little things bring us great joy.
Song for Nobody
Thomas Merton
A yellow flower
(Light and spirit)
Sings by itself
For nobody.
A golden spirit
(Light and emptiness)
Sings without a word
By itself.
Let no one touch this gentle sun
In whose dark eye
Someone is awake.
(No light, no gold, no name, no color
And no thought:
O, wide awake!)
A golden heaven
Sings by itself
A song to nobody.
“Keep close to Nature’s heart… and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods.
Wash your spirit clean.
Joe: “I went to my psychiatrist and told him, “Help me, I can’t stop stealing!”
Pete: “What did your psychiatrist say?”
Joe: “My psychiatrist said, “Take these pills for three days, and if they don’t work, get me the latest iWatch.”
Victor Frankl in Man’s Search for Meaning speaks of a man losing all hope, and when he had lost all hope, he died. Frankl says, “Those who know how close the connection is between the state of mind of a man, his courage, and hope, or lack of them, and the state of immunity in his body will understand that a sudden loss of hope and courage can have a deadly effect. . . . When speaking of his friend who died, Frankl said, “His faith in the future, and his will to live, had become paralyzed, and his body fell victim to illness. Woe to him who saw no more sense in his life, no aim, no purpose, and therefore no point in carrying on, he was so lost.” Pps 84-85
NOTE: One of the greatest gifts we can give each other is the gift of hope. Hope is the anchor to tomorrow. Hope gives us something to look forward to. It gives us something to wait with expectation of receiving. Hope is a gift of life. It is an emotional transfusion that reignites the life spark in a human being.
I’m an early riser. I have always been one. I stepped outside this morning and saw some nice colors among the clouds [In San Antonio the clouds are present each morning during the hot summer months. They look like they’re promising rain, but they’re only tricksters – it’s hot and clear by 9 a.m.]. I took a slow mo video of the clouds and when I watched the video a bird suddenly appears in it, it climbed higher in the sky and darted away. I could the birds singing, they were in good voice. I took it as a sign I was going to have a great day. Why not read a good sign into it. It’s the small things that bring great joy. Now, I’ll have my first and second cups of coffee. Oh, it’s going to be a great day.
Joe: “My boss told me he doesn’t understand cloning.”
Pete: “What did you say?”
Joe: “I said, ‘That makes two of us.”
