Is It Better to Use One Aerobic Machine at the Gym or to Vary Aerobic Machines for the Best Workout?

Using a variety of aerobic machines at the gym can often provide several benefits over sticking to just one machine for workouts. Here’s why diversifying your aerobic equipment might be a more effective approach:

  1. Muscle Engagement: Different machines target different muscle groups. For instance, a treadmill primarily engages the legs in a walking or running motion, while a rowing machine works out the arms, back, legs, and core. Using various machines can help you achieve a more balanced and comprehensive workout.
  2. Reducing Boredom: Switching machines can keep your workouts interesting, which might make you more likely to stick with your exercise routine over time.
  3. Overuse Injury Prevention: Repeating the same motion workout after workout can increase your risk of overuse injuries. By varying the machines you use, you distribute the physical stress across various body parts, potentially reducing this risk.
  4. Plateau Prevention: Your body can become accustomed to a particular exercise routine, and your fitness gains might plateau as a result. Varying your workouts can challenge your body in new ways, which is beneficial for continuing to improve your fitness level.
  5. Energy Expenditure: Different aerobic exercises burn calories at different rates. By varying your equipment, you can maximize your energy expenditure, which is helpful for weight management or loss.
  6. Adaptation and Progression: As you become fitter, your workout needs will change. Different machines offer varying levels of intensity and resistance, allowing for a progression that can match your improving fitness level.
  7. Psychological Benefits: Varying your workout routine can give you a sense of accomplishment and novelty, which can have positive psychological effects and improve your motivation.

In conclusion, while consistency in exercise is key, varying the equipment you use for aerobic workouts can provide a holistic approach to fitness that benefits your body and mind. However, it’s also important to find a balance that fits your personal goals, interests, and any medical considerations. If you enjoy a particular machine or find it especially effective for your fitness goals, it might be beneficial to prioritize that machine while still incorporating others for variety.

Thinking Out Loud: The Dance of Love

Today’s Thinking Out Loud reflection is on Boris Pasternack’s  work, Dr. Zhivago.

“Their love was great. Most people experience love without becoming aware of the extraordinary nature of this emotion. But to them—and this made them exceptional—the moments when passion visited their doomed human existence like a breath of eternity were moments of revelation, of continually new discoveries about themselves and life.”

Note: A deep, passionate love continuously breathes new life into a relationship. The parties to the relationship lose themselves in each other. They maintain their individuality and simultaneously surrender themselves completely to the other. Observing them is like watching two great dancers. The individuals become absorbed into the dance of love. With each beat of music they capture another glimpse of the other and fall deeper into love.

Once A Great Love ~ A Poem by Yehuda Amichai

Once A Great Love

Yehuda Amichai

Once a great love cut my life in two.
The first part goes on twisting
at some other place like a snake cut in two.

The passing years have calmed me
and brought healing to my heart and rest to my eyes.

And I’m like someone standing in the Judean desert, looking at a sign:
“Sea Level”
He cannot see the sea, but he knows.

Thus I remember your face everywhere
at your “face Level.”

Is Honey Good for You?

4 Reasons Pro and Con for Adding Honey to Your Diet

Including honey in a diet can have various benefits and drawbacks depending on individual health goals, dietary needs, and ethical considerations. Here are four reasons for and against its inclusion:

Reasons for Including Honey:

  1. Natural Sweetener: Honey is a natural source of sweetness that can replace refined sugars. It adds flavor to food and drinks without the need for artificial additives or high-fructose corn syrup, which are linked to health issues like obesity and diabetes.
  2. Antioxidants: Honey contains antioxidants, including phenols, enzymes, and compounds such as flavonoids and organic acids. These antioxidants have been linked to reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes, and some types of cancer.
  3. Wound Healing: Due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, honey has been used to treat wounds and burns effectively. It creates a protective barrier and fosters a moist wound environment that can expedite healing.
  4. Soothing Effects: Honey is often used in home remedies for cough and sore throat due to its soothing properties. It can coat the throat and alleviate irritation, which may be particularly helpful during a cold or allergy season.

Reasons Against Including Honey:

  1. Sugar Content: Despite its natural origin, honey is still a form of sugar and high in calories. Consuming it in excess can contribute to weight gain and other health problems associated with high sugar intake, such as increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
  2. Allergies: Honey contains pollen and can trigger allergic reactions in some individuals. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include itching, swelling, or even anaphylactic shock in rare cases.
  3. Botulism Risk: Honey can contain spores of the bacteria that cause botulism. While adults typically aren’t affected, it’s a risk for infants and people with compromised immune systems, and it’s generally recommended that children under one year of age avoid honey.
  4. Ethical and Environmental Concerns: Some people choose to avoid honey for ethical reasons, particularly those who follow a strict vegan diet and do not consume products derived from animals. Additionally, concerns about the sustainability of bee farming and the impact on bee populations may also lead some to eliminate honey from their diet.

Each point here presents considerations that may impact someone’s decision to include or exclude honey from their diet. It’s always best to balance honey consumption with overall dietary goals and personal health concerns.

Thinking Out Loud: Are You Being Driven in a Million Different Directions?

Today’s Thinking Out Loud reflection is on Boris Pasternack’s  work, Dr. Zhivago.

“How can you be yourself when you are being blown in a million different directions you can’t control?”

Note: Have you ever felt as if your being blown in a million different directions? I have. I felt as if I was in the middle of a storm with a tornado bearing down on me. It happens to us because living is complex. It’s dynamic. It’s unpredictable. Life can change in an unpredictable second. How can we keep it together and not lose our mind? Some people cope by using alcohol or drugs. They momentarily escape, but when the drug or alcohol effect wears off, they’re back in the storm. This is how I do it when I’m feeling rattled. I make myself slow down and tell myself that slow and sure is faster. I prioritize what has to be done. The most immediate first. And, I make time to go to my peaceful place for ten to 15 minutes. I breathe deeply for a minute or so and then name specific things for which I am grateful. Sometimes, I remain quiet and try to keep my mind empty (not so easy), but I’ve found that my silence is like a prayer and peace settles over me.
