Dancing with Grief – Learning to Live with Loss and Love Again – Episode 94

In Episode 94 of “Journey from Grief to Healing,” Dr. Ray Calabrese reflects on the complex journey of grieving and healing, inspired by the profound insights of Carl Jung and Stephen King. Dr. Ray shares personal stories of navigating life’s unpredictable paths alongside the enduring memory of a beloved partner, drawing parallels between the unpredictable twists of life and the individual nature of grief. The narrative explores the idea that grief, much like a favorite food we try to give up, always lingers, ready to reappear just when we think we’ve moved past it. The episode delves into the notion of “dancing with grief,” a metaphor for engaging with our sorrow in a way that acknowledges its presence while also embracing life. Dr. Ray illustrates this concept using the serenity prayer, emphasizing acceptance, courage, and wisdom as tools to handle the unchangeable reality of loss. Through this journey, Dr. Ray suggests that grieving is not just a process of loss, but also an opportunity for profound personal growth and self-discovery, teaching us compassion, humility, and the true value of life beyond material success.

Today’s Thought: We Are Free to Choose

“I am not what happens to me. I choose who I become.” ― Carl Jung

Early in my academic career I researched alienation. One of the attribute of feeling alienated is a sense of powerlessness. It is the sense that no matter what I do I can not make a difference or influence something or someone to change. When we buy into a sense of powerlessness we move toward apathy. We fail to get involved. We give up. Healthy human beings understand that life is a struggle. They understand that choices must be made and that there is always something one can do if one wants to act. We don’t have to be powerless. We can choose to get engaged in life. We might fail. We might succeed. It is through our engagement in life that we begin to realize our full potential.

Today’s Poem: On Journey by Sakutaro Hagiwara

On Journey

Sakutaro Hagiwara

I’d like to be off to France,
But France is so frightfully far,
At the least though, I’ll pick out a brand new suit,
And mount on a trip carefree.
When the train starts up the overpass,
I’ll lean on the azure window
And think happy thoughts alone,
This May day at dawn,
Leaving it all to the new-grass-sprouting heart.

Today’s Thought: Keep Pushing

You just keep pushing. You just keep pushing. I made every mistake that could be made. But I just kept pushing. ~ Rene Descartes

One big difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is that those who succeed don’t quit. In Descartes words, “They keep pushing.” Failure after failure may hit us, we fail only if we refuse to to try one more time. Who knows we may get the dream we desire. Even if we do not get the dream we were chasing, we’ll know we left it all on the table. When we go all in we eliminate regret. We eliminate excuses. There’s no guarantee success will happen, but there is a guarantee it will not happen if we stop pushing.
