Today’s Poem: Yin and Yang by Kenneth Rexroth

Yin and Yang

Kenneth Rexroth

It is spring once more in the Coast Range
Warm, perfumed, under the Easter moon.
The flowers are back in their places.
The birds are back in their usual trees.
The winter stars set in the ocean.
The summer stars rise from the mountains.
The air is filled with atoms of quicksilver.
Resurrection envelops the earth.
Goemetrical, blazing, deathless,
Animals and men march through heaven,
Pacing their secret ceremony.
The Lion gives the moon to the Virgin.
She stands at the crossroads of heaven,
Holding the full moon in her right hand,
A glittering wheat ear in her left.
The climax of the rite of rebirth
Has ascended from the underworld
Is proclaimed in light from the zenith.
In the underworld the sun swims
Between the fish called Yes and No.

Health Facts: Tired of Getting Leg Cramps?

To mitigate leg cramps, especially those caused by dietary imbalances, consider incorporating the following dietary changes:

  1. Increase Magnesium Intake: Magnesium plays a key role in muscle function. A deficiency may contribute to muscle cramps.
    • Foods rich in magnesium: Leafy greens (spinach, kale), nuts, seeds, whole grains, and legumes.
  2. Boost Potassium Levels: Potassium helps regulate muscle contractions and fluid balance. A lack of potassium may lead to muscle cramps.
    • Foods high in potassium: Bananas, oranges, sweet potatoes, avocados, and tomatoes.
  3. Ensure Adequate Calcium: Calcium is necessary for proper muscle contractions. Insufficient calcium levels might cause cramping.
    • Calcium-rich foods: Dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese), fortified plant-based milks, almonds, and leafy greens.
  4. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can cause electrolyte imbalances, which may lead to muscle cramps. Make sure to drink plenty of water, especially if you exercise or sweat a lot.
  5. Maintain Sodium Balance: If you sweat excessively or lose sodium through exercise, low sodium levels may contribute to leg cramps.
    • Include moderate amounts of sodium from healthy sources like broth, olives, and electrolyte drinks, especially after sweating.
  6. Avoid Excessive Caffeine or Alcohol: Both can deplete minerals like magnesium and potassium, increasing the risk of cramps.

By incorporating these dietary changes and focusing on hydration and balanced electrolytes, you can help reduce the frequency and severity of leg cramps.

Today’s Poem: Evening Prayer by Karin Boye

Evening Prayer

Karin Boye

No time is like this one,
the evening’s final, silent hour.
No sorrows burn any longer,
no voices crowd any more.

Then take now into your hands
this day that is past, like a token.
For I know: into good you will turn
what I have held or broken.

Evilly I think, evilly I act,
but all things you heal and cleanse.
My days then you transform
From gravel to precious stones.

You must lift, you must carry,
I can only leave all things behind.
Take me, lead me, be close to me!
Show me what you next may intend!

Health Facts: “4 Vitamin Supplements to Avoid When Taking Blood Thinners

For individuals using blood thinner medications, such as warfarin or other anticoagulants, certain vitamin supplements can interfere with the medication’s effectiveness or increase the risk of bleeding. Some popular vitamins to be cautious of include:

  1. Vitamin K: This vitamin plays a crucial role in blood clotting, and large amounts can counteract the effects of blood thinners like warfarin. It’s essential to keep vitamin K intake consistent if you are taking blood thinners.
    • Sources: Leafy greens (spinach, kale, etc.) and supplements with high doses of vitamin K.
  2. Vitamin E: In high doses, vitamin E can increase the risk of bleeding by enhancing the effects of blood thinners. It’s best to avoid large supplemental doses (over 400 IU per day) unless advised by a doctor.
  3. Fish Oil (Omega-3): Though not a vitamin, fish oil supplements are popular and contain omega-3 fatty acids, which can thin the blood. High doses can potentially increase the risk of bleeding, especially when taken with blood thinners.
  4. Garlic Supplements: While not a vitamin, garlic supplements are widely used for heart health but can increase bleeding risk when combined with anticoagulants.

Always consult a healthcare provider before adding or modifying any supplements if you’re on blood thinner medications to ensure they won’t cause harmful interactions.

Today’s Thought: Discovering Inner Truths: A Poem on Reflection and the Power of Self-Awareness

I asked the AI program ChatGPT to generate a short poem on the theme of reflection.

Here is the poem:

“The Quiet Mind”

In silence, I find space to see,
A mirrored world inside of me.
Through clouds of thought, the light breaks through,
A clearer path, a clearer view.

Reflection, whether internally or externally focused, seems to be a lost practice in contemporary society. Reflection requires courage. When we reflect internally we may discover, in Jung’s words, our shadow side. We’ll see the monster who is capable of causing great pain. We will also discover other great truths about ourselves. When we internally reflect and face our shadow with courage, humility, and honest, the shadow’s power ebbs and we become free from it’s control.
