Embrace a Growth Mindset to Power Your Lifestyle Goals
What separates lasting lifestyle change from frustration often isn’t willpower — it’s mindset.
A growth mindset is the belief that your abilities — including your capacity for change — aren’t fixed. Instead, your goals and habits evolve through effort, strategy, and persistence.
Research shows that people with a growth mindset are more likely to persevere through setbacks because they interpret challenges as opportunities to learn, not evidence of defeat.
This doesn’t just feel good — it works. When you view a missed workout or a dietary slip as feedback instead of failure, you stay engaged, rather than discouraged.
Action Step (Today):
The next time you experience a slip — however small — pause and ask: “What can this teach me?” Write one insight you gained.
And take this encouraging thought with you:
“Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” — Joshua J. Marine
I’ve not encountered one person who does not have problems. It’s a good reason to cut each other some slack and to let the small issues slide. Some of the people we will meet today have the strength to deal with their problems, others are overwhelmed by the smallest of challenges. A word of encouragement and prayer go a long way in making someone’s day a lot better. The more we can make life easier for each other, the brighter the day will be for all of us..
Researchers tell us that some stress is good for us. It’s called eustress or positive stress. It’s the kind of stress that motivates us to get our goals accomplished, build mental toughness, and pushes us to learn new skills and overcome challenges. When we have too much stress it can lead to burnout and exacerbate health challenges. Today, be aware of the levels of stress you’re feeling. Make written notes of the exact events occurring when you feel the most stress. Review your notes at the end of the day. Are there certain people or situations causing you more stress? It may be time to remove yourself from situations and people who exacerbate your stress.
“One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.” ~ Sigmund Freud
It doesn’t matter where you live, we often find ourselves rooting for our favorite teams. We give them our emotional loyalty. When they win, we win with them. When they lose, especially a big game, we are devastated. For many, our favorite teams are a part of our persona. They take hold of our hidden dreams to be successful, noticed, and better than the rest. Although we may never achieve that kind of status or notoriety, when our teams win championships it’s as if we did it. I wonder if professional athletes understand how much we depend on them to elevate our spirits and lift us out of the often ordinary struggles with living. In some ways the same applies to us. When we are successful and live life confident that we can overcome any challenge that comes our way, we give hope to those who are frightened and fearful of stepping out and embracing life.
Life has its ups and downs. We all experience them. When life knocks us down. We have two choices, we can get up and get going, or, we can stay down. There’s no in between. Sometimes when we’re knocked down, it isn’t fair or just. Maybe our mother or lover will listen to us. Most others are too busy with their lives to spend too much time with us if we’re complaining about life’s injustices. What do we do, we suck it up, refuse to quit, and get going again. We’ll show anyone watching that we are tougher than the moment. Yes, we are tougher than the moment!
There’s no perfect road ahead. Each road will hold a series of challenges to test whether or not you are worthy of traveling the road. We can stand at the fork of the road and ponder as Robert Frost did in his poem, The Road Less Taken, which road to take. If we freeze, unable to decide, we’ve made a choice. It too, will have challenges. Don’t fear setting out on a road that has no GPS coordinates if that road is the way to what you perceive as a chance at a better life. You’ll get lots of advice not to go. Some close friends may get angry with you. Take the chance. Good friends will cheer you on.
