Only a Baby Small ~ A Poem by Matthias Barr

Only a Baby Small

Matthias Barr

Only a baby small,
Dropped from the skies,
Only a laughing face,
Two sunny eyes;

Only two cherry lips,
One chubby nose;
Only two little hands,
Ten little toes.

Only a golden head,
Curly and soft;
Only a tongue that wags
Loudly and oft;

Only a little brain,
Empty of thought;
Only a little heart,
Troubled with naught.

Only a tender flower
Sent us to rear;
Only a life to love
While we are here;

Only a baby small,
Never at rest;
Small, but how dear to us,
God knoweth best.

Today’s Thought: Give Them Something to Talk About

I’ve moved a lot in my life and held a number of different jobs. My dad told me I must have “gypsy blood” which he associated with my mom. I got a kick out of that . With the exception of time served in the service or attending a wedding my mom and never traveled much further than 50 miles from home. I can imagine the conversations they had about my life. It reminds me of singer Bonnie Raitt’s hit song, “Give Them Something to Talk About.” It’s best to follow your heart and give others something to talk about. You’ll be much happier.

A Better Life ~ Being an Example

It’s not easy being a good parent. Parents  teach their children how to love by loving each other.  Parents teach their children to be respectful by being respectful to each other. Parents teach their children how to interact by the way they interact with each other. Children learn more by watching than by listening. Everything a parent does is recorded in the child’s mind.

A Better Life ~ Don’t Let Time Slip Away

Don’t let time slip away. Tell those close to you, you love them. Call your parents tell them thank you for all they’ve done for you. Reconcile with a family member over past grievances. Before you know it, time will have slipped away. The chance to connect will no longer exist. You won’t regret it. Don’t let time slip away.

Life Hack for Busy Parents

Each Moment Is Precious

How do you spend your time? Each moment is precious. Our children are young only once, spend time with them. The person you love most, don’t miss a single second, you’ll never regret it. Parents, neighbors, friends, all are precious, never take them for granted. Make each moment with them, a special moment. Wrap your arms around the moment  use it as if it is your last moment and don’t let go. The following one-minute YouTube video makes one think about how we use our time.

My Mom’s Lesson

My mom grew up the hard way. A daughter of immigrant parents, her mother died when she was two. Her older sister raised mom and her three other siblings. She stopped attending school when she was in fourth grade. This uneducated woman was one of the most intelligent and compassionate people I’ve known. I recall early in my life when she took me to the library and made sure I had a library card. She made sure I read, read, and read some more. She never asked me, What did you do today?” She always asked me, “What did you learn today?” In her wisdom, she reminded me over and again, “Ray, learn something new every day.”

Learn something new every day. A simple sentence from a simple woman holding a deep, profound truth. If I am learning something new, I am growing. I am capable of changing. I am capable of adapting. I am not quitting. I am not deferring. I am capable of doing much, much more than I am doing at the moment.

Her simple lesson has helped me through my grieving process. I discovered grieving throws you on a steep learning curve with only two choices: Learn and grow or stop learning and atrophy. I’ve chosen to learn and grow. Thank you, mom.
