Feeling Good Tip ~ Living a Meaning-Filled Life

Are You Living a Meaning-Filled Life?

Researchers at Tohoku University in Japan did a 7 year study of over 43,000 adults age 40 to 79 asking if they had ikigai (a Japanese term for meaning in life) and then tracked their health. People with ikigai were much more likely to be alive 7 years later.

NOTE: When we have meaning in our life, we have a reason to get up and get going. We’re not going to be bored. We’re not going to feel useless. We’re not going to feel powerless. Meaning is almost always associated with something beyond ourselves. It might be taking care of one’s garden, e.g., “The plants need me.” It might be a project at work that needs your personal skills. If we have a meaning, we’ll find a way. When we find a way, we feel better. We know our life is significant.

Something to Think About ~ The Ultimate Path

From Viktor Frankl’s, Man’s Search for Meaning, “Another time we were at work in a trench. The dawn was grey around us; grey was the sky above; grey the snow in the pale light of dawn; grey the rags in which my fellow prisoners were clad; grey their faces. . . .  I was struggling to find the reason for my sufferings my slow dying.  . . . I sensed my spirit piercing through the enveloping gloom. I felt it transcend that hopeless, meaningless world, and from somewhere I heard a victorious “Yes” in answer to my question of the existence of an ultimate purpose. At that moment a light was lit in a distant farmhouse which stood on the horizons as if painted there, in the midst of the  miserable grey of a dawning morning Bavaria (pp. 53).”

Note: We each have an ultimate purpose. It’s different for each one of us. Sometimes it takes mountains of suffering as Viktor Frankl experienced to discover it. Even in our deepest sufferings there are lessons we can learn if we are open to listening and acting on their message. Once we discover our ultimate purpose, our path becomes clear. We can take no other.

Feel Good Tip for Today ~ Gardening is Good for You

Did you know that gardening has psychological benefits? When we work in a garden our stress lowers, we’re more mindful, our moods improve, and we have a sense of purpose. It’s not the size of the garden that matters, it’s caring for plants and nurturing them to maturity. In effect, we are giving of ourselves, our time, and our energy to another living entity. There’s still time to put plants in the ground or a pot if you live in the northern hemisphere. C’mon, get off the sofa and get gardening, you’ll feel better.

Something to Think About ~ It’s All About Love

Viktor Frankl in Man’s Search for Meaning recalled as he marched with other oppressed and brutalized prisoners in the concentration camp, ‘A thought transfixed me, for the first time in my life I saw the truth as it is set into song by so many pets, proclaimed as the final wisdom by so many thinkers. The truth  – that love is the ultimate an the highest goal to which man can aspire. Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and belief have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love (pps. 48-49).

If you’ve been loved unconditionally you know you feel safe, you know you feel accepted as you are, blemishes and all, there’s nothing else you want to do except return the love in kind without thought to one’s self. When we lose that love, we recognize a deep void that only love can fill. Love, love, and love some more.

Positive Thought of the Day ~ You Are Important

“Use all your hidden forces. Do not miss the purpose of this life, and do not wait for circumstance to mould or change your fate.

NOTE: You are important. You have a unique gift to offer this world. There are people who need you. There are people who are counting on you. There is work waiting for you that no other can do as well as you can. Fan the the embers within you and embrace the wonderful purpose of your life.

Positive Thought of the Day ~ Focus on the Future for Direction & Purpose

The past is a place of reference, not a place of residence.” – Roy T. Bennett

Research has shown that people who have a positive outlook towards the future and are able to visualize a fulfilling future are more likely to take actions that lead to positive outcomes. Focusing on the future can also help us create a sense of purpose and direction in our lives, which can be beneficial for our mental and emotional well-being.

Positive Thought of the Day ~The Journey is the Meaning

There is meaning in every journey that is unknown to the traveler.Dietrich Bonhoeffer

No matter where your journey takes you, it is your journey. It may not be the journey you intended, it may not be the journey you want. It is the journey you have. In your journey, you will discover your purpose in life. Don’t miss it.
