Something to Think About

There’s the easy way and there’s the hard way. Most folks spend an inordinate amount of time looking for the easy way through. It’s why the recent Powerball lottery in the US was worth over 1.2 billion dollars. There is no easy way. It’s the hard way that leads us through. The hard way is fraught with struggles, hard work, and often disappointments. Yet, those who persevere while walking the hard way make their way through. They come out of the journey, successful, stronger, wiser, and better prepared for the next journey.

Today’s Inspiration ~ Fill Your Heart with Love

“A flower without a stem, is beauty waiting to die. A heart without love, is a tear waiting to cry.”

~ Octavio Paz

Today’s Smile

Joe: “I don’t mind going to work.”

Pete: “That’s good, Joe.”

Joe: “It’s the eight hours after I get to work, that drag.”

What If . . .

What if I didn’t have my morning cup of coffee? Man, my day would be amiss. I take my morning cup of coffee for granted, much like I take the sun rising or setting. It’s that way with life. The things and people we love we often take for granted, as if they’d always be there. When we find out they’re not there our emotions range from disappointment to deep grieving. When I look at it this way, my heart has to overflow with gratitude for the things and people I love. It makes sense to appreciate the things and people I love each moment of my life.

Today’s Health Tip ~ Corn Packs a Healthy Punch

Choosing corn and whole-grain corn products can lead to better gut health and help lower your chances of getting diseases like cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. The fiber in corn helps you stay full for longer between meals. It also feeds healthy bacteria in your digestive tract, which may help protect against colon cancer. Popcorn may also help prevent diverticulitis, a condition that causes pouches in the walls of your colon. In a large study, men who ate more popcorn had a lower risk of getting diverticular disease. Corn is rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps protect your cells from damage and wards off diseases like cancer and heart disease. Yellow corn is a good source of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which are good for eye health and help prevent the lens damage that leads to cataracts. Corn also has smaller amounts of vitamins B, E, and K, along with minerals like magnesium and potassium.

Something to Think About

There is a right and wrong. When we lose our capacity to understand there are appropriate ways to act in relationships and society, we disintegrate into dysfunctional relationships and a dysfunctional society. The great teachers from all traditions point the way by teaching us that love, kindness, and peace bring about a more just and harmonious society. When each of us works to create a loving relationship we add to the greater good of creating a just, loving and kind society.

Better Life ~ Good Friends

You know who your good friends are. They are the friends you can count on when trouble strikes. They’re more than a texting partner or a phone conversation. They’re by your side. They give up what they want to do to help you get over your present set of troubles. They stick like glue. When you have friends like these, you have a treasure.

Today’s Power Thought ~ You Are in Charge

We can’t accurately predict what events will come our way each day. We can accurately predict how we’ll react to them. If we are aware of the event, we can choose how we want to respond. We can respond in an appropriate and meaningful way that resolves the event in our favor. Remember, YOU are in charge of how you respond, no one else.

Today’s Poem ~ Unbreakable

Unbreakable

Mirabai

Unbreakable, O Lord,
Is the love
That binds me to You:
Like a diamond,
It breaks the hammer that strikes it.

My heart goes into You
As the polish goes into the gold.
As the lotus lives in its water,
I live in You.

Like the bird
That gazes all night
At the passing moon,
I have lost myself dwelling in You.

O my Beloved Return.
