Joke of the Day

Joe: “I tried a new pickup line, it fell flat.”

Pete: “What was it?”

Joe: “I walked up to this beautiful woman and said, ‘Here I am, what are your other two wishes.'”

Feel Good Tip of the Day ~ What Book Have You Read Recently?

I love to read. I read a book a week, almost always fiction. I get my books from my local library. Early on as a child the library was like a second home to me. The library has changed with the times since I was a child; however, my enjoyment of going to the library remains high. It is a peaceful place to work on my laptop. There are treasures to be found in authors I haven’t read. Today’s library is filled with online resources not readily available to most people. And, you meet interesting people. Check out your library, there’s a treasure waiting for you.

Thinking Out Loud ~ Take the First Step

The Chasm is Not as Wide as You Think

Joseph Campbell says in Reflections on the Art of Living, “A bit of advice given to a young Native American at the time of his initiation: as you go the way of life, you will see a great chasm. Jump. It is not as wide as you think.” P. 26

Note: When I was teaching at the University, I taught a course on change. I learned a lot about change by teaching about it. I learned I could only change myself and no one else. I also learned that the most difficult step to take in making a change is the first one. Once it is taken everything falls into place. Don’t be afraid. Listen to the wisdom of the Native Americans. The great chasm is not as wide as you think, take the first step and the rest will fall into place.

Health Tip of the Day ~ How Healthy is it to Eat Hot Dogs?

You May Want to Skip the Hot Dogs this Summer

Hot dogs are packed with sodium, fat and nitrates (which are linked to cancer).“The traditional ballpark dogs tend to be very high in sodium (over 500 mg in one hot dog), which can contribute to high blood pressure,” explained Jenna Stangland, a registered dietician and co-founder of A4 Health who’s also the team dietitian for the Minnesota Timberwolves. “The quality of the meat can make a hot dog unhealthy, and this is because many times hot dogs are not 100% beef, chicken or turkey — they are processed meats and may contain what is called MSM.” MSM is mechanically separated meat, Stangland explained, and this means the hot dog is a combination of meat, veins, tendons and skin. “Processed meats may also have added nitrates, which, when combined with protein, can form a compound that has been linked to certain cancers,” Strangland continued. “You want to look for a 100% meat (or veggie) hot dog that is not processed, cured or with added fillers.”

Feel Good Tip of the Day ~ Reasons to Feel Good Surround Us

I have two beautiful crepe myrtle trees in my backyard. Crepe myrtle trees are the official Texas state shrub (the photo is of one of my crepe myrtles). Whether I look out my window at them or wander in the yard they make me feel good. I am grateful for them. I am grateful for eyesight to see their beauty. Sometimes, we don’t have go any distance at all to feel good.

Thinking Out Loud ~ Take the Chance on the Adventure

Joseph Campbell says in Reflections on the Art of Living, “Follow your bliss.  . . . The heroic life is living the individual adventure.  . . . Nothing is exciting. if you know what the outcome is going to be.  . . . You enter the forest at the darkest point. Where there is no path. Where there is a way or path it is someone else’s path. You are not on your own path. If you follow someone else’s way, you are not going to realize your potential.” P. 22

Note: When we are young, we often look up to adults we admire and want to be like them. If we’re fortunate, the adults we admire step aside and help us to discover our gift and then encourage us to find the path that leads to developing our gift and sharing it with others. If we are tracked into someone else’s path, we may be successful and rich, but we’ll never fully discover our gift or potential. Take the chance on the adventure. There’s no security. You may get knocked down and forced to confront many challenges. They are there for you to grow, gain wisdom, and strength.
