Today’s Thought: It Amazes Me
Some things amaze me. Driving through the city is one of the things that amazes me. Each day when I’m driving, the overwhelming majority of people are driving safely. For the most part, there are no police around. How amazing is this? People stop at red lights. People let those in crosswalks cross the street. Yes, there are stories of road rage, and we all see people running a red light. Most of the time, we’re working together to safely get to where we want to go. It’s one of the things we take for granted, but it is a big deal. It illustrates that when we care for each other life becomes less stressful.

Today’s Poem: I Watch People in the World by Taigu Ryokan
I Watch People in the World
Taigu Ryokan
I watch people in the world
Throw away their lives lusting after things,
Never able to satisfy their desires,
Falling into deeper despair
And torturing themselves.
Even if they get what they want
How long will they be able to enjoy it?
For one heavenly pleasure
They suffer ten torments of hell,
Binding themselves more firmly to the grindstone.
Such people are like monkeys
Frantically grasping for the moon in the water
And then falling into a whirlpool.
How endlessly those caught up in the floating world suffer.
Despite myself, I fret over them all night
And cannot staunch my flow of tears.

Bouncing Back: Resilience Through Grief, Inspired by a Fig Tree
Welcome to “Journey from Grief to Healing” with Dr. Ray Calabrese. Episode 93 presents a heartwarming comparison to grieving and resilience, inspired by a fig tree named Figgy.
In this touching episode, Dr. Ray draws parallels between the resilience his fig tree, Figgy, showed after surviving adverse weather conditions and the resilience humans show in the face of grief. After Figgy lost all of her branches in a hundred-year storm, she was left with a single limb, mirroring the feeling of losing your support system after the death of a loved one. Just like Figgy, individuals grieving also hold on to their life, though it may seem desolate and void.
Closely observing Figgy’s growth, Dr. Ray patiently waited and cheered for her comeback. Despite fearing the worst, Figgy surprised him with fresh green sprouts, symbolizing hope and survival. Figgy’s resilience is likened to the bounce-back effect needed by those grieving; it doesn’t remove the pain but instills strength to continue living despite the loss.
Sprouting beautifully and producing figs again, Figgy became a testament to the power of resilience. Drawing parallels to the scars left by life’s hardships, Dr. Ray talks about how damage often leaves one stronger, better equipped for the future, and illustrates the human ability to bounce back, much like Figgy. He stresses the importance of being patient and trusting the journey through grief, resiliently moving forward just as Figgy did.
Offering an uplifting perspective on resilience and overcoming adversity, this episode is a must-listen. It’s an inspiring message of hope and strength, meant to offer solace and courage to those grappling with grief.

Today’s Thought: Enjoy Every Moment
I write this post on a Sunday morning. A series of thunderstorms passed through this morning bringing torrential rains with them. It was pouring rain when I parked my car in the church parking lot and headed into mass. A mom and dad and their two girls and a boy were trailing behind me as we walked through the pouring rain toward the church. I had my rainwear on. The family behind me had no rain gear. The kids were laughing and having a wonderful time walking in the downpour. I was sure they’d prefer playing in the rain instead of going into church. They made me smile and reminded me to enjoy every moment today whether it’s raining or sunny.
