Today’s Thought: What Are You Waiting For?

Today’s tools await us to apply them to a new creation. There are people we’ll meet. There are people we live with. There are things we’re planning to do. There are unexpected events. There’s the weather. There’s our work. These are the tools we can use to create a spectacular day. What is the focus of our day. Is it confined to ourselves? Or, do we dare broaden our vision to include other people? We have in front of us an opportunity to make today something special for those we encounter as well as ourselves. What are you waiting for? Time’s a wasting.

Today’s Quote: Making a Difference

Living by faith includes the call to something greater than cowardly self-preservation. ~ J. R. R. Tolkien

Today’s Poem: A Hymn by Donald Marquis

A Hymn

Donald Marquis

CLOTHED on with thunder and with steel
And black against the dawn
The whirling armies clash and reel. . . .
A wind, and they are gone
Like mists withdrawn,
Like mists withdrawn!

Like clouds withdrawn, like driven sands,
Earth’s body vanisheth:
One solid thing unconquered stands,
The ghost that humbles death.
All else is breath,
All else is breath!

Man rose from out the stinging slime,
Half brute, and sought a soul,
And up the starrier ways of time,
Half god, unto his goal,
He still must climb,
He still must climb!

What though worlds stagger, and the suns
Seem shaken in their place,
Trust thou the leaping love that runs
Creative over space:
Take heart of grace,
Take heart of grace!

What though great kingdoms fall on death
Before the stabbing blade,
Their brazen might was only breath,
Their substance but a shade —
Be not dismayed,
Be not dismayed!

Man’s dream which conquered brute and clod
Shall fail not, but endure,
Shall rise, though beaten to the sod,
Shall hold its vantage sure —
As sure as God,
As sure as God!

Health Facts: Getting Bruises? It Could Be Your Diet

Here are two lesser-known but important health facts about how diet can help prevent skin bruising:

1. Vitamin K and Blood Clotting

Importance: Vitamin K plays a crucial role in blood clotting, which helps prevent excessive bleeding and bruising. Fact: Foods rich in Vitamin K, such as leafy greens (kale, spinach, and broccoli), can strengthen blood vessels and improve clotting efficiency, reducing the likelihood of bruising. A deficiency in Vitamin K can lead to more frequent and severe bruising, as the body struggles to clot blood effectively after an injury.

2. Flavonoids and Capillary Strength

Importance: Flavonoids are a group of plant compounds known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can strengthen capillaries and reduce bruising. Fact: Consuming foods high in flavonoids, such as citrus fruits, berries, and onions, can help maintain the integrity of capillaries. Stronger capillaries are less likely to rupture and cause bruises. Flavonoids also support collagen production, further enhancing skin resilience and reducing the tendency to bruise.

Incorporating these nutrients into your diet can significantly improve your skin’s ability to withstand minor trauma and reduce the occurrence of bruising.

The Unconditional Love and Grief of Losing a Pet

Listen to my Podcast, Journey from Grief to Healing, Episode 121 on your favorite podcasting app or click here for Episode 121

In Episode 121 of the “Journey from Grief to Healing” podcast, we delve into the profound sorrow and deep connection we share with our pets. When a friend walked into the gym with the heartbreaking news that his dog had passed away, it brought back memories of my own experiences with pet loss. Pets are more than just animals; they are loyal friends who offer unconditional love and companionship.

In this episode, I reflect on the unique bond between humans and their dogs, sharing personal stories of grief and love. I also read Rudyard Kipling’s poignant poem, “The Power of a Dog,” which captures the bittersweet essence of loving and losing a canine companion. Kipling’s words remind us of the joys and inevitable sorrows that come with opening our hearts to pets.

Join us as we explore how to navigate the grief of losing a pet, honor their memory, and find healing. This episode is a heartfelt tribute to our furry friends who have touched our lives in profound ways.

Today’s Thought: It’s Up to Us

I have a friend who is having a health related problem. My friend’s doctors have told him he has to modify his behavior if he wants to see any improvement. My friend doesn’t want to give up what he is doing. He prefers to continuing doing what he is doing, suffer and complain. We can want to help people but it always up to the person we want to help to want to be helped. His life is a good lesson. Real change has to come from within us. We have to want to change more than we want to stay in a self-defeating pattern.
