Feel Good Tip – Staying Connected with Loved Ones is Important

Make the Call

Every once in a while I’ll hear the complaint, “My kids never call me.” Where I hear the complaint, I ask, “Do you call them?” The answer I get is, “No, they’re suppose to call me.” Ah, I think, I see the problem. Whether it’s children or a friend or someone else who is close, we can’t read their minds. We don’t know their struggles. All we get is a glimpse and it is a fast one at that. If staying in touch with folks you love is important (it’s important for me). Make the effort to make the call. Take responsibility for nurturing the relationships. You’ll be surprised how fast it will grow.

I asked the AI program ChatGPT to list 5 myths associated with happiness.

Here’s the 5 myths that ChatGPT generated. How many of these myths do you hold as true?

Here are five common myths about happiness:

  1. Myth: Happiness is the Absence of Negative Emotions: Many people believe that happiness means feeling positive emotions all the time and avoiding negative ones. However, true happiness involves a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, and fear. It’s more about having a healthy emotional balance and being able to navigate and learn from different emotions.
  2. Myth: Money and Possessions Guarantee Happiness: While financial stability can certainly contribute to a sense of well-being, the pursuit of material wealth alone does not guarantee lasting happiness. Studies have shown that once basic needs are met, additional income or possessions have diminishing returns in terms of increasing happiness.
  3. Myth: Happiness is a Destination: People often think of happiness as a future goal or a destination they need to reach. However, happiness is more about the journey and the way you approach and experience life on a daily basis. It’s not something you achieve and then maintain indefinitely, but rather something you cultivate through mindful living.
  4. Myth: External Events Dictate Happiness: Many believe that external circumstances, such as getting a promotion, finding a partner, or achieving a certain goal, are necessary for happiness. While these events can bring temporary joy, long-lasting happiness often stems from an internal state of contentment and perspective.
  5. Myth: Happiness is Selfish: Some people may feel guilty pursuing their own happiness, thinking it’s a selfish endeavor. However, taking care of your own well-being and finding happiness can actually make you more capable of helping and positively impacting others. It’s not a zero-sum game; personal happiness can lead to a more compassionate and giving attitude toward others.

Feeling Good Tip ~ Tap Down the Stress Level

Who hasn’t felt stressed? I don’t see any hands. It happens. What if there were a simple technique we could use to quickly lower our stress level? I’d like that. Yesterday, a potential answer showed up on my YouTube selections. In the video, Professor Andrew Huberman, neuroscientist, provides a quick way to lower our stress level. Anyone can do it. Here’s the video.

Feeling Good Tip ~ A Pleasant Surprise at the Supermarket

Taking Time to Connect

I went to the supermarket today. While I was pushing my cart through the produce section, this guy comes up and taps me on the shoulder. I look at him. He looks familiar. My brain is racing for a name and location. Fortunately, my brain didn’t have to race to far. It stopped at A. I said, “Hi, Al. How are you?” Al said, “You remembered me. I recognized you, but I don’t remember you name.” From there we blocked the area in front of the jalapeños and avocados and had a nice conversation. Ten minutes later we split. Taking time to have a catch up conversation is always a good thing. I felt good after talking with Al and I hope I he felt the same after speaking with me.

Feeling Good Tip ~ Looking for the Good in Each Other

I was talking to a friend at the gym today. My friend also lives in my neighborhood. I mentioned another neighbor who was doing some landscaping. My gym friend went off on her and told me why he didn’t like her. His take was much different than min. I viewed her as kind and compassionate. She was there for me during my two hip operations. Two different takes on the same person. When we overlook another’s faults, there’s a good chance they’ll overlook our faults. The world is always a bit better when we see the good in each other.

What We Eat Can Defeat the Blues

Here are some foods that will make you feel good, lift your mood, and fight off depression:

  1. Salmon: Salmon is packed with omega 3 fatty acids, which are proven to improve our mood. Omega 3s, Delbridge described, play a vital part of our body’s cell manufacturing and makes our hair and skin shiny, even giving the appearance of happiness.
  2. Mushrooms: Vitamin D boosts mood and has anti-depressant qualities. Mushrooms have a ton. We usually get our Vitamin D from the sun. But it’s also found in mushrooms, milk, beef, chicken livers and fatty fish, notes Marjorie Nolan Cohn, a registered dietitian and founder of Philadelphia-based MNC Nutrition. Vitamin D’s main role is converting and regulating the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin. The goal, Cohn said, is to maintain the right amount of serotonin, which can ward off depression and anxiety. Too much or too little serotonin can have adverse effects. She recommends a Vitamin D supplement for many of her patients.
  3. Dark Chocolate: Dark chocolate has plenty of health benefits, including easing emotional stress, according to a 2009 American Chemical Society trial. Registered dietitian nutritionist Sonya Angelone said dark chocolate boosts mood because it raises endorphin levels. Angelone advises choosing the dark chocolate with at least 70% cacao.
  4. Leafy Greens: Leafy greens contain vitamin B6. B6 vitamins are vital for converting tryptophan into serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a primary role in mood, learning, appetite and impulse control, Cohn said. B6 is found in poultry, seafood, beef, leafy greens, spinach, kale.
  5. Grapes: Grapes contain something called resveratrol, Angelone said, an antioxidant proven to boost mood.

A Feel Good Happening

On my way out of the gym, I stopped to talk to a friend. He was in between sets working on his biceps, He was beaming about his son. His son just received a big promotion. My friend was exercising his bragging rights. He felt good. I wasn’t about to steal his thunder. The moment was his. He was basking in his son’s success. He went on to tell me that he was proud of his son’s success and even prouder of the man his son had become. I like hearing feel good stories. The world needs more of them.

Feel Good Tip for Today

How Large is Your Circle?

I know a guy who believes he has the whole truth. He can’t be dissuaded. His mind is locked tighter than Fort Knox. I don’t like to hang out with him because the conversation is about himself and his work. He has no time or interest in anyone else. The folks that I know that are the happiest are those whose circle is big enough to include other people; folks who continually seek to learn; folks who have a deep interest in what others are doing. I hope you’re one of the people with a large circle that can hold many others, your mind is open to new ideas, and you take a deep interest in others. The world needs more like you.

A Word & a Laugh

Sometimes feeling good arrives in the strangest of ways. I like to go to the library to work on my blog. I am sitting at a table. Also sitting at the table is a young guy, college aged. He’s sitting on the other side of the table off to my right. We’re both working on our Macbooks. He started to take his glasses off to rub his eyes and a lens popped out. He was embarrassed. I said, “That’s happened a hundred times to me. We both laughed. I felt good. He felt good. Yes, life is good when we connect, even in simple ways.

What Are You Seeing?

I have eyes that see sights, people, animals, trees, flowers, movement, and letters on a page or screen and they send messages instantaneously to my brain to process. My eyesight has saved me from stepping on a coral snake, a large fire ant hill, and numerous other situations. We don’t think about our eyesight until it’s limited or gone. Just looking about and seeing people we love, a deep blue sky, or the evenings constellations should make one  feel good. Take a moment and marvel at the miracle of your eyesight and all the wonders it brings to you.
