Feel Good Tip of the Day

Is It Check-In Time?

I like to go to the gym. I hit the gym six days a week. I enjoy exercising. I also enjoy the friendships I’ve made. Over the past three weeks one of my friends wasn’t showing up. At first I thought he was on vacation. When his absence went into  three weeks I wondered if something was wrong. i decided to text him and ask how he was doing. He responded immediately. He was grateful I was checking in on him and said he life was very busy and he would return soon. I was happy he was okay. I think he was happy that someone checked in on him. Is there someone in your life you haven’t seen in a while? Think about checking in on them. All you need to do is text or email.

Feeling Good Doesn’t Have to Cost

Living in south Texas I am well aware of the potential of too much sun. Yet, at times, it’s as if my body is screaming at me, “Ray, get your butt out in the sun, I need the sunshine.” Yesterday was one of those days. I waited until the day cooled down to a cool 95 F (35 C) LOL before I headed out for a walk. The sun, heat and gentle southerly breeze felt good. When I returned home I was sweating and had to shower. My cool shower felt great as well. I didn’t need to spend a single dollar to feel good. All I had to do was get out of the house and start walking.  Here’s hoping you discover the good things in life that surround you.

Feel Good Tip for Today

Would You Pick it Up?

I went to the supermarket, in south Texas it’s HEB, yesterday. I met a neighbor and we parked our baskets out of the way and started chatting. Half way up the aisle where we were standing a bag of chips fell off the shelve. I made a mental note to pick it up if it was still on the floor when we finished chatting. I wasn’t counting, but I estimate at least 20 people walked by the chips including workers. Then, one woman cane along, stopped, picked up the chips and placed them back on the shelve and continued on her way. She restored my faith. She was awake. When I see people do something nice, kind, or loving, it gives me an emotional boost and reinforces my notion, that doing something nice, kind, and loving for others is also my daily job.

Which Circle Demands Your Attention & Energy?

If I drew three circles and labeled them: Circle 1: things I can control. Circle 2: Things I want to control but it involves relationships. Circle 3: Things beyond my control. The first circle would not have many entries. I can only control myself (and sometimes that seems difficult. LOL. Circle two is much larger. It involves family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. Circle 3 is the rest of the stuff like politics, weather, sport teams, mocking birds eating figs off my fig tree. You get the idea. My unhappiness increases in direct proportion to the amount of attention I expend trying to control things in circles 2 and 3. If I let go of trying to control things in circle 2 and 3 and focus on circle 1, suddenly my unhappiness decreases and my happiness increases.

Can You Give Up Your Addiction?

On a whim a year and a half ago I gave up caffeine. It wasn’t easy. Living without caffeine has been a freeing experience for me. I can have whatever choice of drink I want with breakfast without having the nagging caffeine depletion feeling. Getting free of whatever holds us is a freeing experience. and applies to all things that have a hold on us. Addicts will say, “I can give it up anytime.” Reformed addicts know that is not true. Is it time to take a life assessment and identify personal addictions? Are any of these personal addictions hurting you or those you love? If you’re answer is “I can give it up anytime” it may be time to test whether or not you can. There are many support agencies that can help.

Feel Good Tip of the Day ~ Data Drive Your Day to Happiness

Take some time this evening to reflect on your day. Use a notepad to record your reflections. Don’t make it complicated. Here’s what to do. Start at the beginning of your day and slowly, in your mind, replay the day as if you were watching a video. Anytime you come to an event that causes an emotion or stress make a note on your notepad. Use a few words like happy, got a call from my friend. Or, angry, reading an online article about a political event/person I don’t like. When you finish, look at your notepad and pull out the happy events. How can you make more of those happen. And, how can you reduce the events than cause negative emotions within you. You have the power within you to make your day a happier one.

Feel Good Tip of the Day ~ Sometimes it’s Better to Roll With It

It’s tough to be quiet when you think the other person is wrong or nuts. It’s easy to argue with this person and attempt to put him/her in his/her place. No matter the “rightness” of your argument, you lose if your attempt is the change the way the other person thinks. You see this played out on all the political talk shows. It doesn’t matter which perspective they promote, they’re right in their minds. If you want to feel better, roll with it. You don’t have to agree. You can ask questions in a gentle way that may help them reflect on their position. In any event, you will not lose a friend because of an argument over political issues. And, you’ll sleep better.

Feeling Good Tip of the Day ~ Dealing with Stress-Filled Days

Do you ever feel as if your on one of those moving walkways at the airport and there’s no way to get off? It’s one thing after another. And, just when you think you’ve cleared everything, boom, an avalanche strikes (I know I’m mixing metaphors, LOL). I’ve read articles that encourage people to take a day or two off a week. I’ve found when I’m jammed packed with things to do and take a day off I spend the day thinking about how much I’ll have to do when I start up in the morning – it’s not as relaxing as promised. A different way may by to rethink the day. Sure it’s busy. One way to bring the hectic pace down is is to rethink how we eat our meals. Set aside the digital media and enjoy the meal. Resist grabbing a coffee and a quick meal and eating it on the train, bus or in the car. Make dinner time special where everyone has a chance talk about their day. Everyone should get a chance at debriefing.  If you must work at night, set a time when work stops Make it an hour before you go to bed and chill (watch something relaxing).. If we put our creative caps on, we can think of multiple ways to step off the treadmill and avoid the avalanche .

Feel Good Tip of the Day ~ Is It Time to Mind Your Own Business?

One of the best ways to have a peaceful spirit and feel happy is to stay out of other people’s business. Sometimes it’s hard to do especially when they are the people we love. They, like us, have a right to live their life the way they choose to live it without our interference. You may feel some angst by not saying what you feel, in the end you will retain friendships. It’s worth it. You’ll feel peaceful and happy, and you won’t cause others to be unhappy..

Feel Good Tip of the Day ~ What Do You Genuinely Like to Do?

An online article in Psychology Today suggests that we can feel more alive by doing something we genuinely want to do. The author says that life doesn’t always give us the opportunities to do something we genuinely want to do. In those circumstances, whenever possible we should find ways to do what we are doing in ways we want to do it. In my posts I’ve been talking about Joseph Campbell’s work. Campbell says if you want to be happy follow your bliss. You might not be rich, but you’ll be happy. I know when I am doing something I really enjoy doing I lose track of time and seem to move into a different space.
