🌾 Today’s Poem ~ The Land of Beyond

The Land of Beyond

Robert W. Service

Have ever you heard of the Land of Beyond,
      That dreams at the gates of the day?
     Alluring it lies at the skirts of the skies,
      And ever so far away;
     Alluring it calls: O ye the yoke galls,
      And ye of the trail overfond,
     With saddle and pack, by paddle and track,
      Let's go to the Land of Beyond!

     Have ever you stood where the silences brood,
      And vast the horizons begin,
     At the dawn of the day to behold far away
      The goal you would strive for and win?
     Yet ah! in the night when you gain to the height,
      With the vast pool of heaven star-spawned,
     Afar and agleam, like a valley of dream,
      Still mocks you a Land of Beyond.

     Thank God! there is always a Land of Beyond
      For us who are true to the trail;
     A vision to seek, a beckoning peak,
      A farness that never will fail;
     A pride in our soul that mocks at a goal,
      A manhood that irks at a bond,
     And try how we will, unattainable still,
      Behold it, our Land of Beyond!

😎 Today’s Happy Brain ~ Singing in the Shower? Keep it Up!

Singing, Cognition and Dementia

As British researchers reported in the journal Dementia, a group singing program developed by the U.K.-based Alzheimer’s Society, called “Singing for the Brain,” may help improve aspects of memory, sociability, and mood in people with dementia. Though there’s no evidence that memory-dependent activities, such as singing, can prevent dementia, many experts think they may help delay the onset of some age-related cognitive problems.

Today’s Smile 😃

Joe: “I asked my sister why her kid goes ‘cluck, cluck, cluck.”

Pete: What did she say?”

Joe: “She said her son thinks he’s a chicken.”

Pete: “What did you say?”

Joe: “I ask her why don’t you tell him he’s not a chicken.”

Pete: “What did she say?”

Joe: “She said, “We need the eggs.”

🍎 Today’s Health Question ~ Can Running in Old Running Shoes Hurt You?

True or False: Running in worn running shoes can cause injuries?

Answer:

True:“An older running shoe that has tons of miles logged on it won’t be as responsive, cushioned or supportive as a new pair,” says Greg Laraia, an athletic trainer and running consultant at Custom Physical Therapy in New York. That lack of responsiveness, cushion and support is cause for concern: Overuse injuries, such as tendonitis, can occur when you train in an older pair of shoes if the lack of cushion doesn’t provide enough support when your steps land. In some runners, that can even result in over-pronation, Browne explains, which “over time can make a runner more prone to injury at the knee, foot, ankle or hip.”

😎 Today’s Happy Brain ~ Can You Remember a List of 10 Items?

How to remember a list of 10 Items

I use the following strategy to keep a list in my head when I head to the grocery store.

I visualize the item I want with each number on my list.

  1. One Bun
  2. Two Shoe
  3. Three Tree
  4. Four Door
  5. Five Hive
  6. Six Sticks
  7. Seven Heaven
  8. Eight Gate
  9. Nine Vine
  10. Ten Hen

Here’s how I do it. I’m heading to the grocery this morning. I need blackberries. I’ll visualize blackberries inside a hamburger bun. I need mustard so I’ll visualize a mustard bottle sticking out of my running shoes. I’ll continue this process for the items I need. After I make up my list. I review it. I might go over again on the way to the grocery. It never fails me.

🤗 A Better Life ~ Enjoy the Space Between

‘Ma’ is a Japanese term for the space between beats in music or theatrical performances. Give ‘ma’ a chance to show itself in your calendar by creating room for some breezy nothingness between appointments.

✒️ Writers’ Wisdom ~ Fire Up Your Imagination

“The worst advice a young writer can get is “Write what you know.” Imagination is more important than experience.”

🍎 Today’s Health Question ~ Want Shiny Hair?

True or False: Fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel will help keep your hair shiny and full?

Answer:

True: Fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel are packed with healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Your body can’t make these healthy fats, so you have to get them from food or supplements. They help protect you from disease, but your body also needs them to grow hair and keep it shiny and full.

🌾 Today’s Poem ~ The Builders

The Builders

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

All are architects of Fate,
Working in these walls of Time;
Some with massive deeds and great,
Some with ornaments of rhyme.

Nothing useless is, or low;
Each thing in its place is best;
And what seems but idle show
Strengthens and supports the rest.

For the structure that we raise,
Time is with materials filled;
Our to-days and yesterdays
Are the blocks with which we build.

Truly shape and fashion these;
Leave no yawning gaps between;
Think not, because no man sees,
Such things will remain unseen.

In the elder days of Art,
Builders wrought with greatest care
Each minute and unseen part;
For the Gods see everywhere.

Let us do our work as well,
Both the unseen and the seen;
Make the house, where Gods may dwell,
Beautiful, entire, and clean.

Else our lives are incomplete,
Standing in these walls of Time,
Broken stairways, where the feet
Stumble as they seek to climb.

Build to-day, then, strong and sure,
With a firm and ample base;
And ascending and secure
Shall to-morrow find its place.

Thus alone can we attain
To those turrets, where the eye
Sees the world as one vast plain,
And one boundless reach of sky.
