No Man is an Island
John Donne
No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
Or of thine own were:
Any man’s death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
My parents’ door was always open to neighbors, friends, and relatives. When someone knocked, they were invited in and my mom insisted they have coffee and a piece of cake or pie. My dad would come from the living room and they all sat at the kitchen table. Hospitality is a big deal. It makes others feel welcomed, valued, and loved.
“And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” ~Sylvia Plath
“Either you decide to stay in the shallow end of the pool or you go out in the ocean.”
~ Christopher Reeve

“Your writing voice is the deepest possible reflection of who you are. The job of your voice is not to seduce or flatter or make well-shaped sentences. In your voice, your readers should be able to hear the contents of your mind, your heart, your soul.” ~ Meg Rosoff
