Today’s Poem ~ Love in Twilight

Love in Twilight
Stephen Vincent Benet
There is darkness behind the light — and the pale light drips
Cold on vague shapes and figures, that, half-seen loom
Like the carven prows of proud, far-triumphing ships —
And the firelight wavers and changes about the room,

As the three logs crackle and burn with a small still sound;
Half-blotting with dark the deeper dark of her hair,
Where she lies, head pillowed on arm, and one hand curved round
To shield the white face and neck from the faint thin glare.

Gently she breathes — and the long limbs lie at ease,
And the rise and fall of the young, slim, virginal breast
Is as certain-sweet as the march of slow wind through trees,
Or the great soft passage of clouds in a sky at rest.

I kneel, and our arms enlace, and we kiss long, long.
I am drowned in her as in sleep. There is no more pain.
Only the rustle of flames like a broken song
That rings half-heard through the dusty halls of the brain.

One shaking and fragile moment of ecstasy,
While the grey gloom flutters and beats like an owl above.
And I would not move or speak for the sea or the sky
Or the flame-bright wings of the miraculous Dove!

Today’s Smile

Joe: “My professor was explaining Freudian slips and gave us an example.”

Pete  “What happened?”

Joe: “I asked him to give us a mother example.”

Something to Think About

I’ve made my share of mistakes during my lifetime. Some days I think that’s all I’m making. It’s okay, it tells me I’m not perfect and that suits me just fine. I’ve tried to learn from my mistakes, but, at times, I’m a slow learner as I’ll repeat the same mistake until it dawns on me to do something different. Making mistakes is a human thing we all share. Mistakes keep us humble. Mistakes let us know we’re not better than anyone else (perhaps luckier if no one witnesses our mistakes). When we learn from our mistakes we keep our ego in check. We know that each mistake isn’t a setback, it’s a setup to learn even more.

A Better Life ~ Great Relationships

A great relationship can’t be bought. A great relationship is earned through unconditional love, trust, commitment, respect, and a dance that knows no end.

Power Thought ~ You’re Tougher than you Believe

Airplanes take off against the wind, salmon swim upstream, when things seem tough, you’re tougher. Toughness is built into your DNA. Never Quit.

Today’s Inspiration ~ Keep Your Eyes Open

“Often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.” ~ Helen Keller

Today’s Inspiration ~ The Starting Place for Love

“Love begins by taking care of the closest ones – the ones at home.” ~ Mother Teresa

Something to Think About

I have friends who are extremely liberal. I have friends who are extremely conservative. They won’t discuss politics with each other because they know those that don’t believe like them are wrong (or nuts). I think discussing hot topics is a good thing when those discussing them can set aside their biases and discuss the hot topics intelligently without rancor. Discussion of hot topics is central to growth and understanding. It is possible to enter into a civilized conversation about a hot topic and keep one’s integrity in check.

Today’s Smile

Joe: “I got fired as a bus driver for being too kind.”

Pete: “Why did they do that?”

Joe: “I gave up my seat to a blind man.”

Today’s Good Word ~ Step

I can recall the first steps of my children. They took their first steps with courage, staggered a bit, wobbled and dropped to the floor. They crawled to the coffee table, pulled themselves up and started again. Babies have a wonderful lesson for adults. When life knocks us down, get up, take the first step, even if it is a bit wobbly, and set out again. When we choose to stay on the floor, it’s all over. Life asks us to get up and take the first step in faith knowing that a second and third step will follow.
