Today’s Quote: Learn the Lesson the First Time

There is only one thing more painful than learning from experience and that is not learning from experience. ~ Archibald MacLeish

Today’s Poem: Daybreak by John Donne

Daybreak

John Donne

STAY, O sweet and do not rise!
The light that shines comes from thine eyes;
The day breaks not: it is my heart,
Because that you and I must part.
Stay! or else my joys will die
  And perish in their infancy.

Health Fact:

I asked ChatGPT about the difference in lifespan between those who text while driving and those who don’t. Here’s the answer:

Determining the exact difference in lifespan between those who text while driving and those who do not is challenging due to the complexity of variables involved. However, it’s well-documented that texting while driving significantly increases the risk of accidents, which can lead to serious injuries or fatalities.

Key Points:

  1. Increased Risk of Accidents:
    • Texting while driving distracts drivers, leading to a higher likelihood of accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), texting while driving is six times more likely to cause an accident than driving under the influence of alcohol.
  2. Fatalities and Injuries:
    • Statistics show that distracted driving, which includes texting, is a major contributor to road fatalities. For example, in the United States in 2019, approximately 3,142 people were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers.
  3. Impact on Lifespan:
    • While there isn’t a direct study that quantifies the exact difference in lifespan, it is clear that engaging in texting while driving increases the risk of premature death due to accidents. Those who avoid this behavior are less likely to be involved in fatal crashes, thereby reducing their risk of early death.

Conclusion:

While we cannot provide a precise lifespan difference, it is evident that avoiding texting while driving can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and fatalities, potentially leading to a longer and safer life. This highlights the importance of promoting safe driving habits and minimizing distractions on the road.

Today’s Thought: Where Are You Going?

I recall when I was finishing my master’s degree my advisor asked me, where do you want to go with this? I look at him and said, “I don’t know. I only know I want to go. I’ll figure it out.” He gave me a look that told me he failed with me. LOL. Much later in life if I were asked the same question, I’d give much the same answer. I know lots of folks who have a clear goal in mind. I admire them. Maybe I envy them. I don’t want to be like them. I like to be open to life’s surprises. It may be that I don’t want to miss anything and I want to experience everything. We all have to figure out our path. When you find one that fits don’t let anyone talk you out of it.

Today’s Poem: A Poison Tree by William Blake

A Poison Tree

William Blake

I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears
Night and morning with my tears,
And I sunned it with smiles
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright,
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine, –

And into my garden stole
When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning, glad, I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

Health Fact: DYK This About Cucumbers?

Here are two little-known but important nutritional facts about cucumbers:

  1. High Water Content: Cucumbers are made up of about 95% water. This high water content not only helps keep you hydrated but also contributes to a feeling of fullness, which can aid in weight management. Additionally, the water in cucumbers can help to flush out toxins from the body and maintain healthy skin.
  2. Rich in Antioxidants: Cucumbers contain several antioxidants, including beta-carotene, flavonoids, and tannins. These antioxidants help combat oxidative stress in the body, which can reduce inflammation and lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer. They also contain cucurbitacins, compounds that have been studied for their potential anticancer properties.

These facts highlight cucumbers’ benefits beyond their refreshing taste and low-calorie content, making them a valuable addition to a healthy diet.
