Today’s Joke: Joe and His GF Made for Each Other

Joe: “My girlfriend is learning to read with braille for her job. Right now she’s reading a horror story written in braille.”

Pete: “How does she like the story she’s reading?”

Joe: “She said she knows it’s going to have a bad ending, she can just feel it.”

Today’s Thought: Discover Endless Possibilities

I frequently visit family who live in a community abutting the Mississippi River. When I visit I enjoy going down to the river. I watch eagles dive for fish. I watch barges work their way through the locks, and I stand amazed at the wide expanse of the river. When I’m standing on the River’s edge I wonder what’s on the other side. There’s only one way to find out, I have to cross the river. Fortunately there is a bridge that spans the river. When I drive across the bridge, the other side opens up into all of the western United States. The possibilities are endless. That’s how it is in life. We can stay where we’re comfortable and feel safe or we can cross our metaphoric river and discover endless possibilities.

Today’s Poem: Morning Song by Sylvia Plath

Morning Song

Sylvia Plath

Love set you going like a fat gold watch.
The midwife slapped your footsoles, and your bald cry
Took its place among the elements.

Our voices echo, magnifying your arrival.  New statue.
In a drafty museum, your nakedness
Shadows our safety.  We stand round blankly as walls.

I’m no more your mother
Than the cloud that distills a mirror to reflect its own slow
Effacement at the wind’s hand.

All night your moth-breath
Flickers among the flat pink roses.  I wake to listen:
A far sea moves in my ear.

One cry, and I stumble from bed, cow-heavy and floral
In my Victorian nightgown.
Your mouth opens clean as a cat’s.  The window square

Whitens and swallows its dull stars.  And now you try
Your handful of notes;
The clear vowels rise like balloons.

Today’s Poem: To Freedom by Ralph Chaplin

To Freedom

Ralph Chaplin

Out on the “lookout” in the wind and sleet,
Out in the woods of fir and spruce and pine,
Down in the hot slopes of the dripping mine
We dreamed of you and Oh, the dream was sweet!
And now you bless the felon food we eat
  And make each iron cell a sacred shrine;
For when your love thrills in the blood like wine,
The very stones grow holy to our feet.

We shall be faithful though we march with Death
And singing storm the barricades of Wrong,
For life is such a little thing to give.
We shall fight on as long as we have breath–
Love in our hearts and on our lips a song–
Without you it were better not to live!

Health Fact: Enjoy Exercising? Learn to Rest Between Workouts

Here are two little-known but important facts about resting after a workout:

  1. Rest Enhances Muscle Repair through Satellite Cells Activation: When you rest after a workout, your body activates satellite cells, which are a type of stem cell crucial for muscle repair and growth. These cells proliferate in response to muscle damage caused by exercise and then fuse with muscle fibers, helping to repair and strengthen them. Without adequate rest, this process is hindered, potentially leading to slower recovery and increased risk of injury.
  2. Rest Supports Hormonal Balance and Recovery: Rest periods allow your body to regulate the release of important hormones, such as cortisol (the stress hormone) and growth hormone. After intense exercise, cortisol levels can remain elevated, leading to muscle breakdown if not managed properly. Adequate rest helps normalize cortisol levels and promotes the release of growth hormone, which aids in tissue repair and muscle growth, ensuring your body recovers efficiently and builds strength over time.

Health Facts: Get the Nutritional Bang from Spinach

Spinach is a nutritional powerhouse, and here are two lesser-known tips that can help you get the most out of it:

  1. Cooked Spinach Enhances Nutrient Absorption: While raw spinach is great, cooking it can significantly enhance the availability of certain nutrients. Cooking spinach increases the bioavailability of antioxidants like beta-carotene and lutein, which are better absorbed after cooking. It also helps to break down oxalates, compounds that can inhibit the absorption of minerals like calcium and iron. Light steaming or sautéing spinach can maximize these benefits.
  2. Vitamin K Interaction: Spinach is rich in Vitamin K, which plays a crucial role in blood clotting and bone health. If you’re on blood-thinning medication (like warfarin), it’s important to maintain a consistent intake of Vitamin K because fluctuations can affect the medication’s effectiveness. You don’t need to avoid spinach entirely; just aim for a consistent amount in your diet to keep your Vitamin K levels steady.

These tips can help you make the most of spinach’s nutritional benefits while managing its impact on your overall health.
