🤗 A Better Life ~ Brief Moments of Wisdom

There are times when wisdom sneaks through my door and I let go of all I want to do and take up all life asks me to do. In those brief moments, I find peace and happiness.

💡 Something to Think About

My grandmother (nonna to Italians) and my mom were both poor, but no one ever left their home hungry, without having a cup of coffee, glass of wine, or bottle of beer. They intuitively knew people were more important than things.  Thanks for the lesson Nonna and Mom

Joe: My girlfriend wanted a puppy and I didn’t, so we compromised.”

Pete: “That’s great, Joe. What was the compromise?”

Joe: “We got a puppy.”

🍎 Today’s Health Question ~ Should Mushrooms be Part of a Healthy Diet?

Mushrooms are a Tasty and Healthy Addition to Your Diet

Mushrooms are low in calories and fat and cholesterol-free, mushrooms contain a modest amount of fiber and over a dozen minerals and vitamins, including copper, potassium, magnesium, zinc and a number of B vitamins such as folate. Mushrooms are also high in antioxidants like selenium and glutathione, or GSH, substances believed to protect cells from damage and reduce chronic disease and inflammation. Some studies suggest mushrooms are the richest dietary source of another antioxidant called ergothioneine, or ERGO, which is also present in large amounts in red beans, oat bran and liver. ERGO and other antioxidants are primarily concentrated in the caps, not the stems.

My dad would take me mushroom picking every fall. He had his secret spots to find button mushrooms he wouldn’t share with anyone. I’m surprised he trusted me (LOL). Mom sautéed them with EVOO, garlic and onions. It was a great side to go with our meals.

🌾 Today’s Poem ~ I Must Go Down to the Sea

I Must Go Down to the Sea

John Masefield

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

“People say, ‘What advice do you have for people who want to be writers?’ I say, they don’t really need advice, they know they want to be writers, and they’re gonna do it. Those people who know that they really want to do this and are cut out for it, they know it.”
