Health Fact: Stay Hydrated to Think Clearly

Hydration Affects Cognitive Function: Even mild dehydration (a loss of 1-2% of body water) can impair cognitive functions such as attention, memory, and motor coordination. Staying well-hydrated is crucial for maintaining mental clarity and overall cognitive performance. This is particularly important for activities requiring sustained focus and concentration.

The Seasons of Sunflowers and Grief: A Journey of Healing

In this heartfelt episode of “Journey from Grief to Healing,” we explore the metaphor of sunflowers and their life cycles to understand our own journeys through loss and healing. Join me as I share my experience of planting sunflowers in San Antonio, Texas, and the lessons learned from their growth and bloom. From the early planting in February to the vibrant blossoms in summer, these sunflowers reflect the seasons of life and grief.

We delve into John Keats’ poignant poem, “The Human Seasons,” drawing parallels between the natural cycles and our emotional experiences. As I recount the story of my tallest sunflower and its eventual decline, we reflect on the beauty and brevity of life’s moments.

This episode offers a comforting reminder that, like sunflowers, we all have our seasons of blooming and withering, and that the memories of our loved ones continue to shine in our hearts. Tune in for a message of hope, love, and the enduring power of life’s cycles.

Health Fact: Your Gut & Brain are BFFs

Gut-Brain Connection: The health of your gut can significantly impact your brain health. The gut and the brain are connected through the gut-brain axis, a complex communication network. Gut microbiota (the community of microorganisms living in the digestive tract) produce neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which influence mood and cognitive function. An imbalance in gut bacteria can contribute to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

Today’s Thought: Silence is a Good Option

The mailboxes in my neighborhood are all grouped together in a cul-de-sac. It’s a short walk to the mailboxes from my home. On my way to my mailbox a neighbor was walking toward me with his mail. We stopped, greeted each other, and engaged in conversation. I triy to avoid discussions about religion or politics, especially with neighbors or casual acquaintances. Guess where my neighbor wanted to go? No, he didn’t want to talk religion, he was on a well-motivated rant about his political views. My views were diametrically opposed to his views. I did get a moment when he was gasping for air, and said, “I see things differently.” Well, that only stoked his fire and off he went again. I listened until he ran out of gas. He finally said, “Thanks for listening, I had to get it off my chest.” I had given some thought to engaging with him, but I felt we were both fixed in our positions. I like him as a person and as a neighbor, why let something so trivial get between the relationship we have. It doesn’t always have to be a battle. Sometimes it’s better to let things go.

Today’s Poem: When I love by Nizar Qabbani

    When I love

    Nizar Qabbani

    When I love
I feel that I am the king of time
I possess the earth and everything on it
and ride into the sun upon my horse.

    When I love
    I become liquid light
    invisible to the eye
and the poems in my notebooks
become fields of mimosa and poppy.

    When I love
the water gushes from my fingers
    grass grows on my tongue
    when I love
I become time outside all time.

    When I love a woman
    all the trees
    run barefoot toward me…

    Today’s Thought: Live With Confidence

It’s raining as I write this post. The roads will be slick for a bit then the oil will wash off. If you’ve never lived in south Texas you might not be expecting to slide through an intersection. I can happen if it hasn’t rained for a while and you happen to be out and about when it starts. Life is like that. Sometimes the unexpected events pop into our lives. They fall on a spectrum from a wonderful surprise to something quite the opposite. Whatever it is, we have to react to it if we’re to have any control over the eventual affect of the surprising event on us. If we trust ourselves, have self confidence and a solid foundation, we will make it through. Whatever comes your way today, and I hope it’s all good, you already have the strength and wisdom to deal with it. Go forward with confidence.
